Ever since Anita and Jon arrived in Ukarumpa, I’ve been blown away by their generosity. Even before I really knew them, they were inviting us over for get-togethers, helping in class fundraisers, and sharing food literally wherever they went. They’ve put on dinners for our entire class, as well as for the grade 10 and grade 11 on separate occasions.
They helped our senior class put on an Indian Dinner for the community to fundraise for our Senior Retreat to Madang….. there was no way we could have made nearly as much without them. And then Mr McCarthy came with us on our retreat. It is unarguably the best time our class has ever spent together.
Anita has truly blessed the school and the community with being willing to share her skills in photography. So many precious memories for me as a senior are captured in her photos. I was so relieved when I heard Anita was teaching a year book class – it’s just another example of how she sees a need and is willing to step and help with the fantastic skills she has.
Mr Carthy has spent countless hours in the Chemistry classroom patiently explaining concepts to his chemistry students (of which I am one), and Mrs McCarthy does the same for her Anatomy and Physiology students. I’m so grateful for their knowledge and teaching abilities. They push us to high levels of academic achievement, while laughing and sympathising with us on the way.
Through everything they do, there’s always the obvious love they have for youth shining through. Whether it’s a chat at school or doing all-nighters with us seniors, or just reminding us that they’re praying for us and love us….. they make the ministry God has given them with youth here very special…. and we are so grateful.
